About Jitsu Academy SC

Our Story

The first Jitsu Academy location was opened in 2017 by Danilo and Jessica Cherman and is based in Wallingford, CT. It is now owned and operated by Oswaldo Jurema.

Our second location opened in Columbia, South Carolina, in January 2022 and underwent a significant expansion in October 2025. Danilo and Jess, together with their children, proudly own and operate the South Carolina location.

We offer men, women, and children of all ages and experience levels the opportunity to challenge themselves both mentally and physically through the disciplines of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone—from complete beginners to experienced athletes—feels welcomed, supported, and motivated to grow. Our academy provides a relaxed, positive, and family-oriented atmosphere where students can develop confidence, discipline, strength, and resilience both on and off the mats. We believe that training should be challenging while still being enjoyable, and we strive to create a culture built on respect, camaraderie, and continuous improvement. With world-class instructors who bring extensive knowledge, experience, and passion to every class, our students receive high-level instruction in a safe and encouraging environment.
